.Product Description: In Ayurvedic medicine, sesame oil holds a distinction no other oil can claim. It is called the queen of Oils — because it is considered the most complete therapeutic oil in the entire Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, among the oldest medical texts in human history, prescribe sesame oil (til ka tel / gingelly oil) as the base for hair treatments, skin nourishment, and the full-body Abhyanga massage. Matru Ayurveda's Virgin Cold Pressed Sesame Oil preserves this tradition by extracting the oil without heat or chemicals — delivering every ounce of its natural potency, exactly as Ayurveda intended.

Why cold pressing matters for sesame oil specifically

Sesame oil's most important active compounds — sesamol, sesamolin, and sesamin — are naturally occurring antioxidants that give the oil its distinctive ability to protect hair from oxidative damage and premature greying. These compounds are heat-sensitive. Refined or heat-extracted sesame oil, which dominates the market, loses a significant proportion of them during processing.

Cold pressing extracts the oil purely through mechanical pressure at low temperatures, preserving the full antioxidant profile, the complete fatty acid composition (linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids), and the oil's natural light golden colour and mild nutty aroma. What you get in the bottle is genuinely what the sesame seed contained — nothing added, nothing destroyed.

What makes sesame oil unlike any other hair and body oil

Most oils work on the surface of skin and hair. Sesame oil is one of very few that penetrates deeply into tissue. Its molecular structure allows it to pass through the outer layers of the scalp and skin, carrying its active nutrients with it — this is why it has been the chosen carrier oil in Ayurvedic formulations for millennia. When applied to the scalp, it reaches the follicles. When used for body massage, it nourishes the tissue beneath the surface.

Sesame oil is classified in Ayurveda as having Ushna Virya (warming energy), making it particularly beneficial for pacifying Vata dosha — the state associated with dryness, anxiety, hair fall, and nervous exhaustion. This warming, grounding quality is why it is the prescribed oil for Abhyanga and why it produces a noticeably calming effect when used for self-massage before bathing.

BENEFITS:

What Matru virgin cold pressed sesame oil does for you

  • Promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall — Sesame oil's deep-penetrating quality nourishes hair follicles directly. Regular scalp massage improves blood circulation to the follicle bed and creates the conditions for sustained healthy hair growth, while strengthening follicles to reduce shedding.
  • Helps prevent premature greying — The antioxidants sesamol and sesamin protect melanocyte cells (responsible for hair pigment) from oxidative damage. This is one of sesame oil's most distinctive benefits — not shared by coconut or castor oil. Traditional Ayurvedic use for preventing early greying is backed by its antioxidant chemistry.
  • Conditions dry scalp and controls dandruff — Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties address the root causes of scalp dryness, itching, and flaking. Sesame oil's deep penetration means scalp conditioning lasts well beyond the day of application.
  • Natural UV protection for hair and scalp — Sesame oil naturally filters UV rays, providing a degree of sun protection for hair and scalp. Particularly valuable in the Indian climate, where UV exposure contributes significantly to dry, brittle, and damaged hair.
  • Deep skin nourishment and anti-ageing — Rich in Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, sesame oil is absorbed rapidly by the skin, moisturising from within, improving elasticity, and visibly reducing dryness, fine lines, and uneven texture with regular use.
  • Traditional Abhyanga body massage oil — In Ayurveda, Abhyanga (warm oil self-massage) is considered one of the most important daily self-care practices. Sesame oil is the prescribed base oil for Abhyanga — its warmth, depth of penetration, and Vata-balancing properties promote circulation, ground the nervous system, and nourish all body tissues.
  • Soothes joint stiffness and muscle soreness — Massaged into joints and muscles, sesame oil's warming energy and anti-inflammatory fatty acids provide relief from stiffness and soreness. A well-documented use in Ayurvedic practice, particularly for Vata-type joint discomfort.
  • Safe and nourishing for baby massage — Sesame oil has been used for newborn and infant massage in India for generations. Its warmth, gentleness, and absence of chemicals make it ideal for baby skin, and it is traditionally used to strengthen bones and muscles during infancy.
  • Excellent carrier oil for Ayurvedic blends — Its deep penetration makes it the ideal carrier for herbal infusions and oil blends. It is the base oil in Matru Ayurveda's 3-in-1 Coconut, Castor & Sesame Oil Blend for this very reason.

How to use — hair, scalp, skin, Abhyanga, baby massage and joints

  • For hair growth and scalp nourishment: Warm 2–3 teaspoons between your palms. Apply to the scalp in sections and massage gently with circular motions for 5–10 minutes. Work remaining oil through hair lengths. Leave for at least 1 hour, or overnight with a shower cap. Wash out with a mild shampoo. Use 2–3 times per week for visible results over 6–8 weeks.
  • For dandruff and dry scalp: Apply directly to the scalp the night before washing. Leave overnight. Shampoo thoroughly in the morning. Consistent weekly use over 4–6 weeks addresses both symptoms and underlying scalp inflammation.
  • For Abhyanga (Ayurvedic full-body self-massage): Warm a generous amount in a small bowl. Begin at the scalp and work downward — neck, shoulders, arms, chest, abdomen, back, legs and feet. Use long strokes along the limbs and circular motions at joints. Leave on for 15–20 minutes, then bathe to remove. Best performed in the morning for its energising, grounding effects.
  • For skin care (face and body): Apply a small amount to clean skin after bathing. Massage gently until absorbed. Use on the face for dry patches, fine lines, or sun-damaged areas. Apply to the body for dry elbows, knees, heels, and rough patches. Best used at night.
  • For baby massage: Warm a small amount in your palms and massage the baby's limbs, back, and tummy with gentle, smooth strokes before bathing. Suitable from birth for external use.
  • For joint and muscle relief: Warm the oil and massage firmly into affected joints, the lower back, or sore muscles. Apply before bed and leave overnight for best results.

Tip: Authentic unrefined sesame oil has a naturally mild, nutty aroma. This is a sign of quality — if your sesame oil has no smell at all, it has been refined and has lost much of its therapeutic value.

Frequently asked questions

Is sesame oil really good for hair growth?
Yes — sesame oil is one of the most documented hair care oils in Ayurvedic medicine. Its deep-penetrating molecular structure allows it to reach hair follicles directly, improving circulation and nourishing the follicle bed. Its antioxidant compounds (sesamol, sesamin) protect follicles from oxidative damage — a key contributor to hair fall and thinning. Classical Ayurvedic texts prescribed sesame oil for hair care specifically for these reasons, and its efficacy is supported by its chemistry.
Can sesame oil prevent premature greying?
Sesame oil is used in Ayurveda specifically for preventing premature greying. Its active antioxidants — sesamol and sesamin — protect melanocyte cells (the cells that produce hair pigment) from oxidative stress, which is one of the primary causes of early greying. This benefit is unique to sesame oil — neither coconut nor castor oil contains these specific antioxidants at meaningful concentrations.
What is Abhyanga and why is sesame oil used for it?
Abhyanga is the traditional Ayurvedic practice of warm oil self-massage, considered one of the most important daily self-care rituals in Ayurvedic medicine. Sesame oil is prescribed for Abhyanga because of its unique combination of properties: it penetrates deeply into skin and muscle tissue; it has warming, grounding energy (Ushna Virya) that balances Vata dosha; and it carries its active nutrients into body tissues rather than sitting on the surface. The practice promotes improved circulation, reduced anxiety, better sleep quality, and sustained joint and skin health.
What is the difference between sesame oil and gingelly oil?
They are exactly the same oil. Gingelly oil is the South Indian name for sesame oil, derived from the Tamil word "gingeli". In different parts of India it is also called til ka tel (Hindi/Bengali), nuvvula nune (Telugu), nalennai (Tamil), and ellu enna (Malayalam). Matru Ayurveda's product is the same oil regardless of the name you know it by — 100% virgin cold pressed Sesamum Indicum seed oil.
Sesame oil versus coconut oil for hair — which is better?
They serve different functions and are best used together. Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and prevents protein loss — protecting individual strands. Sesame oil penetrates scalp tissue and reaches follicles — nourishing the root. Sesame oil also provides UV protection and anti-greying antioxidants that coconut oil does not. For comprehensive hair care, using both (or Matru Ayurveda's 3-in-1 blend combining all three) delivers results that neither oil achieves alone.
Can I use sesame oil on my face daily?
Yes, sesame oil is suitable for daily facial use, particularly for dry or combination skin. Its rapid absorption and Vitamin E content make it effective for moisturising, reducing fine lines, and improving skin texture. For oily or acne-prone skin, use sparingly as a spot treatment or only at night. Always perform a patch test first if you have sensitive skin. Cold pressed sesame oil retains its skin-nourishing antioxidants, making it genuinely therapeutic rather than merely a surface moisturiser.
Is sesame oil safe for baby massage?
Yes. Sesame oil has been used for infant massage in India for generations and is one of the safest, most nourishing oils for newborn and baby skin in Ayurvedic tradition. Its warmth and deep penetration are traditionally associated with strengthening developing bones and muscles. Matru Ayurveda's sesame oil contains no chemicals, preservatives, or synthetic additives — making it completely safe for babies' external use. Consult your paediatrician if your baby has eczema or known skin sensitivities.
